The upcoming Western The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has looked appealing to me for a while now. (I originally used a pic of Brad Pitt in character for the Jesse James goo.) Great cast, great photography, great old-fashioned title. How many long, cumbersome, ending-spoiling titles do you see in movies any more? I think they should all be named that way. The Escape from the Island by the Castaway and His Volleyball by Means of Floating Debris and a Makeshift Raft. The Treatment of a Scared Psychic Child by a Moody Psychologist Who Doesn't Know He's Dead. The Extraterrestrial Journey of the Emotionally-Isolated Astronomer Where She Discovers the Alien Spokesperson is Her Dad. It's catchy!

It sounds good for most movies, but how would we be able to tell Rob Schneider's newest film, A Talentless Comedian Makes Fart and Dick Jokes for a Little over an Hour from last year's Schneider film of the same name?

Retrospection

If I recall the dates correctly, yesterday would have been my grandmother's 100th birthday. She lived to just shy of her 89th, despite a lifetime of chain smoking. I remember her as a sweet, generous woman who liked to laugh and teach me life's simple pleasures; a typical afternoon for us was playing crazy eights and baking cinnamon rolls. Go »

Like the near-weepy set painter whose wife and kids were going to live in the poorhouse if you illegally downloaded The Big Chill? They must have had an effect on me, because instead of sadness or sympathy, they were all I could think about when I read that the make-up artist for Forrest Gump killed herself and her husband. Risky Games

Here's plugging two games that I've been enjoying lately: Dice Wars is a good little miniature online game for one person, playable in about 20 minutes and very satisfying for its size. The text below the game explains the rules, but suffice to say, it's basically Risk but built to be played rapidly thanks to some rule simplification and a very swift AI.
