A Role-Playing Game (RPG) is a game in which players assume the roles of characters and act out fantastical adventures, the outcomes of which are partially determined by chance, as by the roll of dice.

Gothic Earth is a tabletop RPG conducted through speech and the use of dice for the determination of success or failure. Other elements have been used in play such as maps and realistic representations of items within the game. In Gothic Earth players control a character(s) who undertake quests, and whose capabilities advance using statistical mechanics.

The Game Master sets up each scenario and controls minor characters. Players control the primary characters who star in the story.
